Abstract

Sugar has received much attention as an emergency dosimeter for the general populace. This study was undertaken to clarify several conflicts in the literature. Here we report on the spectral characteristics of common ‘cane’ sugar and sucrose, the lower limit of detection for cane sugar, and the influence of absorbed dose on the study of time-dependent EPR signal intensity changes.

The uncertainty (intercept error) in resolving this 150 mGy background signal was only 25 mGy as seen in Fig. 5. This metric is comparable to those found by other authors (Fattibene et al., 1996; Nakajima, 1988, 1995) as an estimate for the detection limit. The standard error of the fit (Table 1) was equivalent to 103 mGy which represents the dosimetric equivalent of the average vertical deviation in the measured dose response.
