Original articleAcrylic copolymer coatings for protection against UV rays
Section snippets
Research aim
The purpose of our research was to prepare a special type of acrylic copolymer with a UV-absorbing group bonded in polymer chains. Such transparent polymer coatings have a considerable ability to protect different types of organic material against UV light without any risk of migration of the UV-absorbing component through the protecting film. The basic properties and UV preservation potential of these copolymers were studied and the behavior of the new material was compared with Paraloid B72.
Materials, preparation of the copolymers
Monomers, provided by Momentive Speciality Polymers, Sokolov, Czech Republic, were used for experiments. The choice of monomers was made in order to use generally available types in such a ratio that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the final copolymer was close to 40 °C (Tg of Paraloid B72). For these reasons, the mixture of methyl methacrylate (usual acrylate monomer) and ethyl acrylate (much less toxic than methyl acrylate contained in Paraloid B72) with a small addition of acrylic
Drying of the polymer films and their basic properties
The weight loss data observed during the polymer drying process are given in Table 2 for the examined polymers and for the reference Paraloid B72 solution in toluene. Table 3 includes a subjective assessment of the polymer film properties during the drying process (tack, toughness). The data demonstrated that from among the various copolymers, possessing different relation of the monomers and different degrees of polymerization, the samples denoted PAR 10/7 and PAR 10/8 approached the reference
Conclusion
Embedding of UV-absorbing groups into a polymeric chain is a way to obtain a material which, in the form of a coating, provides excellent long-term protection against UV radiation to the photosensitive substrate. The performance of such a protective polymer film, containing also Tinuvin 292 UV stabilizer, was demonstrated by an accelerated ageing test. The resistance of the film itself to UV radiation was also very good: no color change or any other type of damage was observed in 1000 hours of

2020, Polymer TestingCitation Excerpt :As the basic component of organic coatings, the research of resins with multi-purpose and excellent performance has become popular among researchers. Acrylate polymers have attracted great interest for many years for high transparency [7], excellent adhesion properties [3], various monomer species [8], and high mechanical strength. However, its application is limited by their short of thermal stability, weather-resistance and fouling resistance [9].

2019, Progress in Organic CoatingsCitation Excerpt :Surfactants [11] and pigments [12–14] may also be involved in degradation processes. But it is generally accepted that UV rays are the main cause of degradation of exterior architectural paints and a reasonable and easy solution is the addition of UV absorbing and stabilizing agents such as organic absorbers (benzophenone or benzotriazole derivatives) and hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) [15,16]. Unfortunately it was shown that there were drawbacks for using of organic agents due to the compatibility or migration problems or decomposition of the stabilizers upon exposure to UV radiation, reducing the service life of polymers [17].
