2022, Regional Studies in Marine ScienceCitation Excerpt :Previous studies have reported high level of heavy metal concentration in the various aquatic biota such as polychaete, fishes and green mussels at Ennore estuary (Padmini and Geetha, 2007; Padmini et al., 2009; Vasanthi et al., 2012, 2013). This estuary is a depository of pollutants like Cr, Cu, Ni, Co, Pb, Zn and Cd in the water column due to low flushing and limited circulation (Jayaprakash et al., 2005). Most of the previous studies have measured the levels of heavy metal and their impact on diversity and population of microorganism and plankton (Padmini and Geetha, 2007; Vasanthi et al., 2012, 2013; Karthikeyan et al., 2020; Sharma and David, 2012; Jebakumar et al., 2018).

2022, Climate ServicesCitation Excerpt :Fisheries, particularly mullets and prawns are found to be a good source in this estuary and once it was appraised as the paradise for mangroves and abode for reptiles, turtles and rare fishes. The traditional fishing communities who are settled and sustained in these region consider the creek as nature’s gift (Jayaprakash, 2003; Jayaprakash et al., 2005; Shanthi and Gajendran, 2009). The creek supports about 3219 fishing families and among the fishing communities, about 49% are small-scale fishing communities such as artisanal fishers, who rely only on the Ennore creek for their livelihood through estuarine fishing, whereas 29.4 % of other fishing communities depend on both the estuary and the sea and, rest of the fishing communities depend only on the sea (Parasuraman et al., 2016).
