Abstract

Inelastic neutron scattering and X-ray diffraction experiments were carried out to study the dynamics of the crystal lattice of PrOs4Sb12, in which the rattling motion of Pr ions has been inferred. A transverse acoustic phonon propagating along the cubic [0 1 1] axis exhibits large softening by about 30% from 300 to 10 K. Temperature dependence of the phonon intensity is quite close to that based on the Debye–Waller factor for the Pr ions. This fact indicates that the mode with the characteristic softening is dominated by the Pr-ion vibration.
