2022, Tunnelling and Underground Space TechnologyCitation Excerpt :TBM performance optimization has been the subject of many research studies and field test trials. In this regard, some major TBM cutterhead design characteristics including cut spacing and specific energy are studied in the laboratory using linear cutting machine tests (e.g., Abu Bakar et al., 2014; Cho et al., 2013; Eskikaya et al., 2005; Gertsch et al., 2007; Lislerud, 1997; Ozdemir et al., 1978; Rostami, 1997, 1993; Roxborough and Phillips, 1975; Sanio, 1985; Snowdon et al., 1982; Tuncdemir et al., 2008; Choi et al., 2014; Ma et al., 2016a, 2016b) rotary cutting machine tests (Farrokh et al., 2015; Qi et al., 2016), and numerical simulations (Innaurato et al., 2007; Liu et al., 2002; Ma et al., 2011; Choi and Lee, 2015; Gong et al., 2006a, 2006b; Labra et al., 2016). The summary of the results of these studies shows, in order to reach an optimum excavation, the ratio of cutter spacing to penetration (S/p) shall be varied to reach minimum specific energy (SE).
Experimental and simulation study on rock-breaking efficiency of disc cutters on composite rocks
2022, International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining SciencesCitation Excerpt :At present, many scholars use UDEC, PFC2D and other two-dimensional discrete element software, and 3DEC, PFC3D and other three-dimensional discrete element software to study the interaction between the cutters and rock. For example, Gong et al.,26,27 Liu et al.,28 Zhang et al.,29 Liu et al.,30 Zhang et al.,31 and other scholars used UDEC or PFC2D to study the breaking efficiency or influencing factors of disc cutters or crack propagation under disc cutters or contact pressure distribution between cutter and rock surface. However, these studies are based on two dimensions, and the critical role of rolling force cannot be considered.
