Editorial note

Directive 98/83 of 3 November 1998 concerns the quality of water intended for human consumption and its objective is the protection of human health from adverse effects of any contamination of water intended for human consumption (Article 1). Article 3 sets out the exceptions to the application of the Directive. Member States are to take the measures necessary to ensure that water intended for human consumption is wholesome and clean (Article 4). Member States are to set values applicable to water intended for human consumption (Article 5). Article 6 sets out the points of compliance for the parameters established according to Article 5. Regular monitoring of the quality of water intended for human consumption is to be carried out (Article 7). Failure to meet the parametric values established is to be investigated and remedial actions are to be taken (Article 8). Information and reporting obligations are set out in Article 13.
