Diffusion of Oxygen in Tungsten and some other Transition Metals

Abstract

Stringer and Rosenfield1 have recently calculated some activation energies for diffusion of oxygen in transition metals, which were not otherwise available. One of these metals was tungsten. In a plot of activation energy versus melting point of the solvent, the authors attempted to show that tungsten and other metals dissolving less than about 1 per cent oxygen lay on a straight line through the origin; while those metals dissolving more than about 1 per cent oxygen fell on a straight line, which did not pass through the origin and which had a small negative slope. The line through the origin was supposed to be indicative of a normal lattice distortion mechanism and the other line an ionization mechanism.
