Floating Vegetation of Lake Kainji, Nigeria

Abstract

FEARS1 that Lake Kainji in Nigeria would become infested with the water weed Pistia stratiotes have not been borne out by recent events. This man-made lake now seems to be free of weed, in contrast to similar lakes elsewhere. At Kariba (area 4,300 km2, closed in 1958) where the lake took 4.5 yr to fill, extensive mats of Salvinia auriculata and Pistia stratiotes accumulated over much of the lake, covering over 10% of the surface by 1960 and more than 22% by 1962 (refs. 2, 3).
