Electron Microscopy of Monomolecular Layers of Thorium Atoms

Abstract

IMAGES of heavy atoms in single molecules have recently been obtained with scanning transmission electron microscopes as well as conventional electron microscopes in both bright and dark-field operation1–4. Because of the random orientation of isolated molecules on the specimen support, only a few of them show the true interatomic distances in parallel projection. Also molecules could stack themselves during preparation. Finally, the limited depth of focus of electron microscopes at 100 kV when viewing atoms5 makes it necessary to obtain a flat specimen.
