Remnant arcs and marginal basins in the Cainozoic development of the Mediterranean

Abstract

Migrations of trench arcs into older marginal basins determined the evolution of the Mediterranean region after the Cretaceous–Eocene closure of the original ocean. Remnant arcs, which now form Corsica, Sardinia and the Balearic Islands separate the Miocene, Pliocene and Recent sea basins. Some remnant arcs such as the Apuseni Mountains separate ensialic basins; others such as the Kabylides, are welded at the fore continental border.
