Tin oxide sensor element for the detection of organic compounds with hydroxy groups

Abstract

The response of a tin oxide sensor element operating at 270 °C to various organic compounds was investigated. The sensor shows high sensitivity and selectivity to organic compounds with hydroxy groups. Phenolic structures e.g. methoxyphenols and benzenediols lead to especially strong signals. Exposure to toluene, furfural and acetone causes no sensor response. The influence of the basicity of the sensor surface and the effect of substituents of the organic compounds on sensor sensitvity are discussed.
