A critical study of 8-hydroxyquinoline as a gravimetric reagent for aluminium

Abstract

Two distinct techniques are available for the use of 8-hydroxyquinoline to precipitate aluminium, the solution being heated either before or after adjustment of the pH to that required for complete precipitation. If the heating is carried out first, errors, which can be positive or negative in value, may arise. Critical examination of the methods shows that the positive errors can be attributed to the co-precipitation of 8-hydroxyquinoline, and the negative errors to its loss by volatilisation before precipitation can occur, and to the formation of mixed-ligand polynuclear aluminium species. Heating the solution after addition of all of the reagents gives correct results.
