Uranyl–lanthanide heterometallic assemblies with 1,2-ethanedisulfonate and cucurbit[6]uril ligands

Abstract

The reaction of uranyl and lanthanide (Nd, Dy, Er, Yb) nitrates with 1,2-ethanedisulfonate (EDS2−) and cucurbit[6]uril (CB6) under hydrothermal conditions gave the heterometallic complexes [(UO2)4Nd2(EDS)4(OH)4(CB6)(H2O)16]·2NO3·8H2O (1) and [(UO2)2Ln1.5(EDS)2(OH)2(NO3)1.5(CB6)(H2O)7.5][(UO2)2(EDS)-(OH)2(H2O)4]·NO3·5.5H2O with Ln = Dy (2), Er (3) and Yb (4), which have been crystallographically characterized. In all these complexes, one EDS2− ligand is bound to one uranyl and one lanthanide ion through its two monodentate sulfonate groups; the uranyl ion is further part of a bis(hydroxide)-bridged dinuclear unit, while the lanthanide ion is complexed by a CB6 molecule. Ribbon-like one-dimensional assemblies are formed in all cases, with complexes 2–4 differing from 1 by the presence of an additional [(UO2)2(EDS)(OH)2(H2O)4] neutral polymeric chain hydrogen bonded to the mixed species.
