Facile preparation of supramolecular (ABAC)n multiblock copolymers from Hamilton wedge and barbiturate-functionalized RAFT agents

Abstract

Two original Hamilton wedge (HW)/barbiturate (Ba) functionalized symmetrical trithiocarbonates have been successfully synthesized and their capability to efficiently mediate the polymerization of styrene, nBuA and isoprene was investigated. Relying on supramolecular association of the recognition couple, telechelic macromolecular building blocks subsequently afford the formation of novel supramolecular (ABAC)n multiblock copolymers, where A is in a glassy state, B and C in a rubbery state. The successful generation of the desired supramolecular structure was evidenced by 1H NMR, ITC, viscometry, and DLS as well as DSC.
