Single-pass semiconductor laser amplifiers are shown theoretically to exhibit sharply peaked lobes (‘bat ears’) at the edges of the near-field output. We discuss the mechanism for their formation and show that it is qualitatively different from spontaneous filamentation in homogeneous media.
