In a mobile ad hoc network (MANET) with multiple Internet gateways, efficient management of mobile IP functionality supporting seamless data services is a major challenge. The inadequacy of existing mobile IP schemes applicable to MANETs motivated the search for more efficient gateway discovery/handoff schemes. A solution for mobile IP-based gateway discovery/handoff in dynamic source routing (DSR)-based MANET is formulated. Enhanced mobile IP protocol suitable for MANET environment, i.e. the mobile IP registration controller, is designed. In particular, one of the most significant contributions deals with the mobile IP handoff triggering mechanism which is adaptively assisted by the DSR route maintenance mechanism. Simulation results are provided to support the idea.
