This tutorial is an introduction to the field of neural computing. It is the first in a series of three tutorials which are intended for engineers applying or considering to apply artificial neural networks (ANNs) to power systems. They give an overview and general appreciation of the basic concepts of ANNs; they also give an insight into how these networks can be employed to solve complex power system problems, particularly those where traditional approaches have difficulty in achieving the desired speed, accuracy and efficiency.
