Preoperative leukocytosis in colorectal cancer patients
2015, Journal of the American College of SurgeonsCitation Excerpt :Our study results show an inverse association between serum albumin level and leukocytosis (AOR 0.58, p < 0.01). Serum albumin level has been introduced as a marker of malnutrition in the literature.16,17 This correlation is in line with the previous report of an association between leukocytosis and malnutrition in cancer patients by Connolly and colleagues.14
Serum albumin and health in older people: Review and meta analysis
2015, MaturitasCitation Excerpt :Albumin serum concentration is also affected by kidney illnesses and by alterations in patients’ state of hydration [26]. A prospective study on elderly patients with a stroke observed how serum concentration of albumin is a negative prognostic index, for mortality and for the development of complications and lack of recovery [27]. Similarly, in elderly patients admitted to a rehabilitation unit, albumin concentration was associated to the development of complications [28].
The long-term nutritional status in stroke patients and its predictive factors
2014, Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular DiseasesCitation Excerpt :On admission to the acute stroke unit, between 8% and 20% of stroke patients are found to be already suffering from malnutrition.1-7 The prevalence of malnutrition rises during the first weeks of hospitalization and affects up to 35%-50% of patients.8-12 Malnutrition is an indicator of a poor outcome at 3-6 months after stroke,3,9,13-18 and low albumin levels at admission have been identified as an independent predictor of poor outcome and higher mortality in the long term.19
