Ion‐pair formation from photoexcited methanes, CH*4 →H +CH+3 and CD*4 →D +CD+3, has been studied by measuring the efficiency curves of H and D using synchrotron radiation. Ion pairs are produced both by direct dissociation and predissociation of the npt2 (n=3–5) Rydberg state converging to the Ã 2A1 state of CH+4/ CD+4. The 4pt2 and 5pt2 Rydberg states are observed here for the first time.

We evaluate the appearance potential for the formation of H-(1Sg)+ CH3+1E) from that for the formation of H(1Sg)+ CH3+(X̃1A1) (13.37 eV, see the text) and the X̃→Ã excitation energy for the methyl ion of ca. 6.0 eV

Lee et al. have remarked the intensity enhancement of the v1⩾3 members in FES (Ref. 22). This enhancement is probably ascribed to accidental overlap of the members of the 5pt2 Rydberg state, just like the relation between P2 and P3 in the present H- efficiency curve.
