Ionic Liquids: The Neglected Issues

Peter Scammells completed a PhD at Griffith University, Brisbane, in 1991 under the supervision of Ronald J. Quinn. After a research appointment at the University of South Florida and an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship at the Technische Universität Darmstadt, he took up a lectureship at Deakin University in 1993. He moved to Monash University in 2001, and is currently Head of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry in the Faculty of Pharmacy. His research interests include the medicinal chemistry of adenosine and opiate receptors as well as potential applications for ionic liquids in pharmaceutical synthesis.



Janet Scott completed a PhD under the supervision of Luigi Nassimbeni and Mino Caira at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, where she also held the position of Lecturer until 1995. After a period as R&D Manager at Fine Chemicals Corporation (1996–1998), she moved to Australia and the Centre for Green Chemistry at Monash University. She is currently a Senior Lecturer in the School of Chemistry and co-Deputy Director of the Centre for Green Chemistry, Monash University. Her research interests include green chemistry and in particular the development of cleaner synthetic routes and the use of supramolecular chemistry and crystal engineering in the preparation of novel functional materials.



Robert Singer, a native of Nova Scotia, Canada, obtained his B.Sc. (Hons) at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax and went on to obtain a PhD in Organic Chemistry at Simon Fraser University as an NSERC-PGS Scholar in British Columbia, under the supervision of A. C. Oehlschlager. He then took up an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship at the Universität Marburg in Germany under the supervision of Paul Knochel, after which he joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at his alma mater. He is now a Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry at Saint Mary’s University.

Abstract

There has been an explosion of interest in ionic liquids in the last five years that has resulted in the discovery of a vast number of new ionic liquids with a wide range of interesting applications. Although ionic liquids are invariably described as highly stable green solvents, thorough investigations quantifying their purity, stability, biodegradability, and toxicity have lagged behind the pace of other research in the area. This review addresses these key issues and summarizes the approaches that have been developed for recycling ionic liquids.
