Temperature and Pressure Dependence of the Band Structure in Bismuth

Abstract

The empirical pseudopotential theory both in the Heine-Abarenkov model (H-A) and in Shaws optimized model (OMP) is used in a systematic investigation of the temperature and the pressure dependence of the levels in the vicinity of the Fermi level of bismuth (Bi). The band ordering in the L-point and in the T-point is discussed. The differences between the results in the H-A model and in Shaws OMP model, the influence of damping factors and the consequences of taking exchange and correlation effects among the conduction electrons into account, are investigated.
