Abstract
Departure from linearity in the stress-strain relationships and plastic deformation are observed in reactor grade graphite at very small stresses. A model is put forward which describes the mechanical behaviour of such a material and a simple mathematical theory is derived which is shown to give an adequate description of the stress-strain relationships of graphite on stress cycling under low compressive stresses.
