Abstract

The PrBaMCoO5 + δ (M = Cu, Fe) layered cobaltites have been synthesized, their crystal structure has been determined, and their thermal expansion and electrical properties have been studied in air at temperatures from 300 to 1100 K. Both compounds crystallize in a tetragonal structure, with unit-cell parameters a = 0.3915(2) nm, c = 0.7685(8) nm, and V = 117.8(2) × 10−3 nm3 in PrBaCuCoO5.30 and a = 0.3918(2) nm, c = 0.7725(6) nm, and V = 118.6(2) × 10−3 nm3 in PrBaFeCoO5.79, and are p-type semiconductors. The linear expansivity of PrBaMCoO5 + δ increases by a factor of 1.3–1.5 between 700 and 800 K, which is attributable to the release of weakly bound oxygen (δ).The S (T) curve of PrBaCuCoO5 + δ has a maximum at 530 K, which seems to arise from a change in the spin state of the cobalt cations.
