Abstract

This report describes the surface profile, magnetic properties and thermal stability of amorphous Fe78Si10B12 ribbons fabricated by melt-spinning using a copper roll in vacuum, He, Ar, N2 and air. Ribbons fabricated in Ar, N2 or air have surface profiles with long deep scratches due to gas bubbles injected along the melt-roll interface, while the scratches on the surface profiles of ribbons fabricated in He or vacuum are greatly reduced in a number and size. The different characteristics of the surface profiles are associated with improvements in the magnetic and thermal properties of the ribbons fabricated in He or vacuum.
