        Legion is a large-scale software project intended to serve as a starting point for the high-performance, worldwide, parallel computing networks of the future. The goal is to provide the illusion of a single coherent virtual machine by hiding the physical structure of the network from the user. Legion is built upon an object-oriented foundation. Some of its design goals are that it should be scalable, user-friendly, easy to program, fault-tolerant, and secure. Legion is an ambitious project. It is being designed as a coherent whole rather than being patched together from various technologies. To date, a campus-wide prototype has been built, and biology, engineering, and physics applications have been demonstrated on it. A usable core system, which will be documented and made available for public use, is under development. One can only assume that the world will be a very different place when Legion-like systems are commonplace. What that world will be like is anyone's guess. This paper gives a well-written glimpse of the underlying technology that will serve as the basis for that future.
