A company employs legal and ethical methods to obtain information from public and private sources about its environment and its competitors. The results are used to anticipate environmental risks, competitor behavior, new technologies, and so on. This article reports on a survey that collected data on both chief executive officer views and chief information officer views on competitive intelligence in their companies. The responses were primarily from companies with competitive intelligence efforts. The most important information technology (IT) support for competitive intelligence is anticipating hardware and software alternatives and providing software and interface supports for competitive intelligence retrieval from public and private sources. The opinions of the executives about competitive intelligence were reasonably supportive. They were most strongly agreed on the importance of competitive intelligence for input to IT planning.
