Abstract

It has been confirmed that and O2− are the cathode products and and O2 the anode products of electrolyzing at 550°C. In the presence of oxide, is oxidized at platinum to by a 6−electron process involving the substrate metal. Ag+/Ag is a satisfactory reference electrode for the concentration range . Formal potentials of other systems on a molal scale are: , , , , . Several other metals corrode or are noble. Ag is corroded by mixtures to a saturation concentration of . On cooling solutions of Ag+ in , a black precipitate of metal is obtained. The bearing of these observations on the corrosion of carbonate fuel cell cathodes is discussed.
