Synthesis and Luminescent Characterization of MAlO3:Eu3+ Red Nanophosphors
MAlO3:Eu3+(M = Y, La, Gd) nanophosphors were successfully synthesized by the rapid gel combustion method at lower temperatures as compared to other techniques such as solid-state synthesis and sol–gel method. Crystal structures of the phosphors were studied
by X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. In concurrence to the XRD data, the fully crystalline single-phase MAlO3 nanophosphors were obtained at 600 °C. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Tunneling electron microscopy (TEM) studies were also carried out to understand morphological
features and the particle size. The incorporation of Eu3+ activator in these phosphors was checked by luminescence investigations. Luminescence measurements indicated M3+ →RE3+ energy transfer. The Eu3+ emission spectra exhibited all the characteristics
5D0 →7F
j
transitions and under UV excitation the phosphors gave reddish orange color. The main peak in the emission spectra was attributed to the 5D0 →7F2 (at 610 nm in case of YAlO3:Eu3+,
612 nm in case of YAlO3:Eu3+ and at 615 nm in case of GdAlO3:Eu3+) electric-dipole transitions of Eu3+ ions.
