ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews methods of decision-making under risk and uncertainty, and focuses on the motivational approach from the position of the Systemic-Structural Activity Theory. It also delves deeper to illustrate how the major provisions of this theory, related to the concepts of goals, self-regulation, internal feedback, etc., help to recognize the mechanisms of decision-making, as well as to create effective systems for decision support. The chapter also covers measurement of the level of motivation; rules of motivation and self-regulation; and the self-regulation model of decision-making. Based on this model, the Performance Evaluation Process (PEP) is proposed, in which the goal, selection criteria, and mental model are formed during decision-making. Express Decision—a mobile device application for quick everyday decision making—is developed. ED uses PEP for solving problems, which are typically solved intuitively, and in which individual biases and emotional factors may be an important influence.
