ABSTRACT

The textile industry in developed countries faces many challenges that lead toward highly advanced development of functional and high value-added textiles. Recently, plasma has been used in textile industry as a green alternative to chemical wet processing due to its economical cost and ecological advantages. Plasma technique is a type of clean surface treatment applied simply on the fabric’s surface without using solvent in addition to keeping the main properties of the fabrics. Plasma is usually utilized for complete cleaning of the fabric surface and for deposition of nanometer range materials to provide new functionalities. Plasma treatment efficiency is governed by the substrate type and the condition of treatment. This chapter reviews the different types of fibers, the different steps of wet processing of textile, and the influence of plasma technology in enhancing the textile functionality.
