Abstract: In order to study the influence of crack on rock’s strength, deformation and crack direct, marble with a 45°single pre-existing crack was tested under uniaxial, biaxial loading and unloading conditions, and high-speed camera was used to record the main failure process and the evolution of cracks. The initiation, growth and the coalescence mode of the cracks were analyzed. The results show that main cracks generate from the pre-existing crack in the zone between-100°and-130°,which is approximately the same as the theoretical predictions. The new cracks are shown as banding, which is due to the change of the max hoop tensile stress and shear stress. The failure mode of the specimen under unloading varies from shear failure to tensile-shear failure, which is more complicated than that of under uniaxial and biaxial loading. The speed and level of the failure under unloading condition are more obvious than that of uniaxial and biaxial loading.
