Abstract
This essay reconsiders the psychoanalytic theory derived from Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan that Laura Mulvey uses to support her theory of the gaze in the 1975 essay "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema." "Visual 'Drive' and Cinematic Narrative" also reconsiders and rereads the three Alfred Hitchcock films Mulvey uses to prove her theory of the patriarchal gaze: Vertigo, Rear Window, and Marnie.
