Abstract
Worldwide digital networking, automation of individual or even all business processes and the restructuring of existing business models are just a few effects caused by the digitalization. The changes that companies have to face are enormous and are no longer limited to industries that rely on modern technology for their products or services. These changes are manifold and also affect the enterprise system landscape of companies to a large extent – starting with the use of business application systems (e. g., enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems) for supporting and planning of business processes in companies, including the integration of modern concepts/technologies (e. g., in memory computing, augmented reality or 3D printing) up to the change of the classical horizontal value chain towards complex value networks. Due to the dramatically increasing digitalization of everyday business and society itself, much higher demands result for information system landscapes as well as for computing and storage capacities. Digitalization requires that data, processes and communication are available without local and temporal limitations. Customers expect additional functionality from enterprises (such as real-time shipment tracking) that is impossible without digital process support. Therefrom results a renunciation from holistic approaches. Nowadays, companies again are increasingly supporting individual business areas and departments with separate, strongly area- or task-specific enterprise systems. Despite many consolidation efforts in the past, heterogeneous and complex software landscapes consisting of various types of enterprise software are now once again increasing. Therefore, there is a high demand for future-oriented and versatile business software. This applies in particular to ERP systems which as enterprise-wide application systems are meanwhile integrated into the operational processes of numerous companies and thus continue to form a cornerstone of the enterprise-wide information system landscape.
