ESTABLISHING A RESEARCH SCHEME FOR SMALL VEGETABLE GROWERS : THE CASE OF UPPER MGETA HORTICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECT MOROGORO TANZANIA

Abstract:
Experience of the efforts to improve vegetable production of small scale vegetable farmers in Upper Mgeta, Morogoro District in Tanzania is presented. Upper Mgeta Horticulture Development Project (UMHODEP) is based at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), Morogoro, Tanzania. In cooperation with District Agriculture and Livestock Development Office - Morogoro, the project was established for horticultural development in the area. Establishment of a research scheme for small scale vegetable farmers is among the development activities. The scheme involves on-farm research and demonstration activities being done in various plots. These plots are researcher managed plot, producer group managed plots and farmer managed plots. The description of the on-farm trials, the demonstrations and the farmer participation in the activities is elaborated. Several activities are outlined to show our experience in the intervention.
