Abstract

To understand the solidification behavior of the 304 stainless steel and compare it with experimental observation, DICTRA simulations were tried along with complete equilibrium solidification and Scheil solidification. The amount of δ-ferrite phase was calculated versus temperature and the solute concentration was explored along the distance in each phase. Several cooling rates and different interface morphology were used. As a result, solute concentrations calculated at the interface seemed to be in good agreement with experimental measurements. The amount of δ-ferrite phase obtained through the diffusional solidification was larger than that of equilibrium solidification and experimental data. The difference between simulated and experimental results will be reduced if more refined and careful experimental measurements are tried and the kinetic assessment which modifies the mobility database is performed.
