Abstract

High temperature hardness of various carbides was measured to analyse the hardness of camented carbides at high temperatures. Sintered carbide specimens which have the grain size of about 100 microns, were made. The hardness was measured up to 1200°C by a micro-Vickers hardness tester. Titanium carbide showed lower hardness at elevated temperatures in spite of high hardness at room temperature, tungsten carbide showed low hardness, and tantalum and niobium carbide showed high hardness at elevated temperatures. Mixed carbides, (WTiTa)C, showed higher hardness not only at room temperature but also at elevated temperatures. However the mixed carbides were much more brittle than single carbides. These phenomena were discussed in some"detail, comparing them with the properties of cemented carbides.
