Prototyping Step-by-Step Bending of Thin Walled Vessels

Abstract

This article discusses small batch or single unit fabrication of thin walled vessels of small devices by means of prototyping, which is currently used for early testing and in some cases for verification of operability of device prototype. Considering the requirements to the quality of vessels, the step-by-step bending (SSB) technology was selected, where numerous consecutive V bends are used in order to obtain big radius of workpiece. The essence of SSB is comprised in replacement of one bend with several bends with lower radius and angle. In the course of the work vessels have been fabricated using SSB and bending with conventional tooling, herewith, the preset radius has been maintained in both cases. The quality of step-by-step forming depends on the number of bends and steps between them: the higher is their number, the smoother is the product surface. Economic expenditures for SSB are expressed in total number of bends per unit product. It has been demonstrated that this method is more suitable for single unit production, it is highly versatile, and does not require for additional equipment and tooling except for the sheet bending press. An example of practical application of this technology is given.
