A new linear accelerator, the design and construction of which have been the subject of work at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute for 2 years from 1970, is described together with its performance to date. The machine was test operated from April to August 1972, followed in September by experiments using the accelerator.
The accelerating waveguides are in five sections, two of which have a length of 2m each, the remainder being 3m long each. The design characteristics of the electron beam are, for a maximum peak microwave power of 20MW with a frequency of 2, 857MHz fed into each accelerating section: 180MeV maximum energy with zero current, and 80MeV with 600 mA for a pulsewidth of 2μsec. The pulsewidth is variable from 5nsec to 2μsec, with arange of pulse repetition from 50 to 600pps. The beam actually obtained in the test operation roughly satisfied the above design characteristics. A short explanation is given of: the accelerating waveguide sections, the microwave system, the pulsers, the electron injector, the beam transporting system, the vacuum and cooling systems and the annexed computer. In addition, experimental facilities to be used with the linac are briefly described.
