ABSTRACT

This chapter offers an introduction to autoethnography. It explores the concept and interpretations of autoethnography and how it evolved as a process as well as a qualitative research method. It also explores the strengths of autoethnography and the criticism and scepticism that have been raised. The relationship to ethnography and in particular indigenous studies is briefly noted. Related methods are also briefly explained. When adopting autoethnography as a process, librarians need to understand the uniqueness of the method and how autoethnography can add value. They also need to understand how to promote the use of autoethnography to collect data from various communities – especially vulnerable communities.
