Projections of commercial airline flight schedules worldwide. Describe characteristics of each flight such as: departure and arrival airports, flight times, carrier, fares, capacity, and more. Projections are made at the beginning of every time period (month or year) and project the schedules for that time period until the next update is received. Data from 1979-March 1987 are available monthly. Data from 1987 onward are available annually. (2013)

This dataset is only for use by MIT students, staff, and faculty. It will not be shared with anyone outside MIT.
Over the time period the data are available in three different record layout structures: Merge, SSIM (Standard Schedules Information Manual), or WDF (Worldwide Direct Flights). Merge and SSIM files are arranged in a fixed-field (.dat) file format; WDF files are arranged in delimited (.csv) data files. The following structures are available for the various months and years: January 1979-March 1987: Merge; April 1987-July 1998: SSIM; August 1998 and onward: WDF. Most data have worldwide coverage. The exceptions are the following months which cover only North America: February, March, August, and September 1980; August 1983; July 1984; and August 1985. Files/data for the following months are missing and not available: February and September of 1979; September-December 1987. The immediately prior schedule can be the next best substitute. Users might notice a pattern in the earlier file names: they include include the data of creation (not effective data); e.g., IQ851221.dat was created in December of 1985 but reflects schedules for January 1986 and SO871126.dat was created in 1987 but reflects schedules for 1988. File names beginning in 1999 tend to reflect the effective date. See the record layout documentation files for explanations of the structure and contents of each file format type. Note that the record layout files fail to define the codes for several of the variables. The MIT Libraries is compiling a list of sources for those codes and this information will be forthcoming. |
