Besides classical methods, such as dynamic programming, network flow techniques have been extensively used to solve the problem of short term hydro-thermal coordination of electricity generation. Nonlinear flows in a replicated network, can adequately model the hydraulic generation of a system of reservoirs, which complements thermal generations in satisfying known forecasts of each hourly demand. Side constraints or penalty functions must be used, at each time interval, to prevent excessive or insufficient hydro-power generation.
