Abstract

In simplest terms, Behind the Executive Door is about the primacy of relationships in the workplace – especially the significant relationships between bosses and their subordinates. Thus far, we have examined how Remarkable bosses are likely to foster positive and growth-promoting relationships with their subordinates. We have considered the unrequited work issue that impedes Perilous leaders from being fully effective and forming developmentally oriented relationships. And we are alerted to the serious behavioral problems that can make working for a Toxic boss especially difficult.

1
I have serious reservations about the coachability of Toxic leaders because too much ego or psychological dysfunction gets in the way of their willingness to open up and learn. Further, for many, the prospect of change represents something they must defend against. In short, trying to coach a Toxic leader can be a serious waste of time for all involved, raise expectations that cannot be delivered on, and be a bad financial investment because the ROI is simply not going to be there.

“Stockholm Syndrome” is a paradoxical psychological phenomenon wherein people held hostage can express adulation and have positive feelings toward their captors. This was offered as an interpretation of what happened to Patty Hearst when she was abducted by the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) in the 1970s. There can be a psychological corollary for long-term employees reporting to Toxic bosses, i.e., this is a way to understand why they remain – especially when they are in comfortable working conditions and feel well-cared for financially.
