Abstract

Kent offers an in-depth reading of the American photographer Walker Evans’s Cuban photographs from 1933. Focusing on the act of urban wandering and the figure of the flâneur, the chapter explores both Evans’s first extended photo-essay and how it informed subsequent Havana imaginaries. “Mapping the City: Walker Evans in Havana” includes a series of analyses of images from the essay, and looks at how other contemporary authors and photographers influenced Evans’s work. The chapter concludes by reflecting on the way Evans’s images impacted on the development of a pre-revolutionary Havana aesthetic.
