Computations of flash flood propagation in natural river valleys and urban areas are presented. In the mathematical model of free-surface unsteady flow, the shallow water equations are assumed. In order to solve these equations for a rapidly varied flow, a numerical scheme based on the finite volume method was applied. To estimate the mass and momentum fluxes through calculation cell interfaces the Roe scheme is used. The calculated results are examined against the experimental data. The measured variations of water depth at the control points in the flooded area were available from physical modelling. The experiments were carried out in the hydraulic laboratory of ENEL-CESI in Milan (Italy). Generally a good agreement between the measured and calculated results was observed.
