The purpose of this chapter is to describe the four major kinds of inbred mice used in research and the various mating systems used to produce them. By weighing the advantages and disadvantages of each of the kinds of mating systems and of each of the kinds of mice, an investigator may make discriminating choices of the mice and of the systems most appropriate for his own research.
