Abstract

This chapter delves into the discourse of various Syrian and Iraqi media outlets in a bid to study and explore the environment within which the extremist discourses of groups like ISIS and al-Hashd al-Shaabi have originated. Research data, collected from multiple influential local media outlets, are analyzed and discussed based on discursive ideologization and manipulation. This chapter primarily aims to tackle the question of sectarianization within the media discourse in Syria and Iraq through exploring the employed manipulative and ideological aspects.

After driving ISIS militants out of several areas in northern Syria, the Kurds announced the creation of a self-rule in 2015 to run Kurdish-majority areas of northern Syria under the banner of “Federation of Northern Syria-Rojava.” This has ignited an aggressive Turkish response for fear of a similar move by Turkey’s Kurds, and the Turkish military then repeatedly bombed Syrian Kurdish areas in a bid to deter the alleged threat (Turkey v Syria’s Kurds v Islamic State, BBC Monitoring, 23 August 2016).

22
Turkey intervened militarily into northern Syria and targeted Kurdish-held areas in an attempt to prevent the establishment of a Kurdish self-rule or self-administration along its southern border, but its operations had been limited due to an American military presence alongside the Kurdish-led SDF troops who jointly fought against ISIS in the group’s de facto capital of Raqqa and other parts of northern Syria.

The rifts emerged between Iraqi Kurds and Iran-supported pro-government Shia militias during the fight against ISIS over areas of control in liberated areas in northern Iraq. These rifts have intensified during the KRG-led independence referendum in Iraqi Kurdistan, and the security situation in the disputed province of Kirkuk deteriorated at the time to reach the level of military confrontations between the Kurds and government-Shia forces. But the crisis was resolved later following regional and international involvement.
