Is the change coming to the automotive industry really as surprising as the repeatedly used term “disruption” indicates? Or is it rather a process of transformation that has been going on for decades, in which decision-makers were able to derive the current changes from a point many years in the past? It is a process that has been documented, in keynotes at congresses and in books. In 1989, Fredrick Vester, an expert in “Networked Thinking”, wrote in his book “Ausfahrt Zukunft 2000” (“Exit Future 2000”) that automotive manufacturers should migrate towards offering mobility in the 2nd millennium rather than just building cars. The basis of the book was a study commissioned with Vester by Daniel Goeudevert two years previously. The Ford boss at the time fell into disgrace with his later Volkswagen boss Ferdinand Piëch amongst other things due to his far-sightedness and his unbending will for early implementation when he was responsible for development at Volkswagen.
