Examining the surface radiation data observed during May–August 1979, a parameterized radiation transfer model developed at the University of Utah, U.S.A. has been used to compute the atmospheric radiative properties for four stations over the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and one station in the plain area representing different climate. The results show that there is generally satisfactory agreement between computations and observations. Analyses of the computed solar heating and infrared cooling profiles illustrate that the intense raise of temperature at the surface in summer over the Plateau not only increases the surface solar heating rate but also produces higher heating in the troposphere. Furthermore, the infrared cooling rate in the lower atmospheric layer near the surface seems to be less over the plateau than the plains. Obviously, these are favourable factors to promote the plateau to be a heating source for the atmosphere.
