Abstract

We consider a malaria model including human response to health-promotion campaign for bed-net usage. We propose a formulation of the human–mosquito contact rate which is based on the idea of information-dependent epidemic models. We show that the model allows to easily determine optimal control strategies for implementing health campaigns. Moreover, the controlled system may predict a dramatic reduction of malaria incidence even when the uncontrolled system predicts stable endemicity.
