The new BMW R 18 has been designed to evoke classic bikes such as the BMW R 5. The R 18 is powered by a newly developed, high-capacity two-cylinder boxer engine.

In 2016, BMW Motorrad presented its concept R 5 Hommage. The Munich-based company has now unveiled its R 18, the style and technical features of which are inspired by classic models such as the BMW R 5. That's why the new bike has a lightweight steel cradle frame, and the swinging arm rear suspension with exposed driveshaft resembles a rigid frame. The teardrop tank, the exposed cardan shaft and the double-striped paintwork also contribute to the 1930s classic look. The stanchions of the telescopic forks have a diameter of 49 mm and, like classic bikes, are fitted with fork shrouds. The suspension travel is 120 mm at the front and 90 mm at the rear.

The R 18's completely newly developed two-cylinder boxer engine has 1,802cc and provides 67 kW (91 HP) of power at 4,750 rpm. The maximum torque of the big boxer is 150 N m and occurs between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm. The driver can choose between three riding modes: Rain, Roll and Rock. The cruiser is also equipped with automatic stability control (ASC) and traction control (MSR). A reverse assist and a hill start control are available as options. In addition to the standard model, BMW has also unveiled the exclusive R 18 First Edition. What's more, BMW Motorrad is offering plenty of scope for customisation.
